A Love Song for Bobby Long

Bollywood Actress Amrita Rao | Bollywood Actress Sexy Pictures

What instantly comes to your mind when we talk about the 1970s? Needless to say, only two things instantly strike our minds, hip hop music and the retro fashion. It was the era when fashion industry was growing in Europe. From the mid 1960s, American impact on Indian silver screen was visible. The Indian culture was blending with the Western. First thing this blend brought was the change in fashion. In the 1970s bobby print shirts, short jackets, bell bottom pants, big goggles, skirt-blouse and thin sarees had become the first choice of Bollywood’s glamour icons. Bollywood divas like Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore and Asha Parekh sizzled in thin sarees, while B’wood’s first super star Rajesh Khanna, action man Dharmendra and the angry young man Amitabh Bachchan made the bobby print shirts and bell bottom pants favorite among people. Eventually, these things went out of fashion, but with the launch of ‘Om Shanti Om’ in 2007, the retro theme made a comeback. The fever gripped the nation when Karina dazzled in a retro style saree in song ‘zoobie doobie…’ from superhit movie ‘3 idiots’. The theme was again used in movie ‘Once upon a time in Mumbai’. In one of his recent movies, Akshay Kumar has worn a leather jacket and a scarf around his neck. So, what’s retro about it? Remember, Rishi Kapoor wearing a leather jacket a scarf in his first movie ‘Bobby’. Even Vinod Khanna used to wear it the same way. It’s not only the silver screen that’s gone 40 years back. The ad-filmmakers are also using it widely. The Dairymilk chocolate ad ‘Aaj pahali taarikh hai…’ was instant hit. A recent ad of Vivel soap features characters dressed like Jitendra and Leena Chandavarkar in famous song ‘Dhal gaya din, ho gayi sham…’ from 1970 movie ‘Humjoli’. The two hippy-type looking guys in the commercial of Cadbury’s Five Star chocolate are also dressed up the old fashioned way. Oh! will it be right to call it ‘old fashion’.
The retro mania doesn’t end here; the theme is also used in many TV serials during scenes especially having old songs. Needless to say, it’s also popular in theme-based parties. Well, so much projection of the style on the screen was bound to make an impact on people. Broad checks, short jackets, bell bottoms, lacy hairbands, big goggles and many other accessories of the 70s have hit the market and are doing a great business.Well, the blend of old and new is also seen. The bell bottoms are now low-waist jeans and bobby print is used on modern styled dresses too. The tops have reduced a bit in length and slight changes have taken place in designs of sarees. When I asked a young girl wearing a short top and a bell bottom jeans, why she was dressed like that, she instantly replied, “It’s the ‘latest’ fashion.” Hmmm, seems she has never seen Zeenat Amaan or Parveen Babi. Well, the fact of the matter is ‘retro’ is no more retro, which means ‘old’. And with more and more films and commercials using the theme the fever is surely increase in future. Who knows, one day the picture on a city road may become identical to the one taken 40 years back. Picture abhi baki hai dost!<!– From http://www.buzzle.com/articles/back-to-the-70s.html –> <!– google_ad_section_end –> When you think back in time, you know that there are lots of things for which you are grateful, even though at the time of the event, it doesn’t always seem so. Times like the World War also had some obscure but positive impacts. One such impact was seen in the world of fashion. When the men left their homes to lay their lives for their country and beliefs, the world changed the way the dressing sense was defined previously. The 1940s fashion is one such fashionable times which defined the style statements of years to come.In the year 1939 when England and France hand in glove decided to rage war on Germany, the social dynamics of that decade suffered a setback. With the war on, everything from food to clothes was short in supply. Before the war and even after that, Paris was considered to be the haute couture capital of the world with Italy coming second in line. As these countries got engulfed in World War II, the fashion designing, fashion shows and apparel industry in general across Europe and United States took a blow. Rationing came into existence in these troubled times and the government pulled strings to control fashion and over-expenditure in order to prevent people from spending on luxurious things rather than basic necessary items. The government controlled the amount of fabric to be used in a dress and made some mandatory rules in the hope of saving the decreasing supplies. As a result, the ladies had to forgo wearing silk stockings, and made do with bobby socks, stitching seams in the skirts or by just shaving off hair from their legs. Similarly, the gentlemen also sacrificed their elaborate double breasted suits and adopted single breasted suits with single pleated trousers. Wool, silk, leather, nylon, etc. were utilized for making uniforms, shoelaces, parachutes and other items needed in the war. As the times was tough, the men and women rose to the occasion and did not give up on war or fashion.
Make do and mend was the philosophy of this era. As opposed to earlier times, the focus turned to lighter cloths with the introduction of many different fabric materials. Women preferred broader shoulders and padding for it was added in their clothing. With stockings being sparse, 1940s fashion saw women ingeniously drawing a line at the back of their legs, to give the impression that stockings were worn. Less material was used to make skirts and jackets, and hence they became shorter. A decade before, what was considered as outrageously shocking like women wearing trousers, became a commonplace event, though the trousers preferred by women were loose overalls or trousers with boots.Heels was still adorned by the ladies with the improvisation of slight platforms. Swing skirts were much in demand in those times, with the floral prints dominating the designs during the early 1940s and geometrical patterns becoming a popular style statement of late 1940s fashion. When Paris and Milano were cut off from the rest of the world during the battles, United States fashion designer had to rely on their wits, instead of getting ‘inspired’ by their French and Italian counterparts, to create something out of the blue. They conjured up the sportswear which was ready to wear and practical for the women to don.War had a similar ripple effect on 1940s fashion for men. The vest disappeared, and bright colored wide ties came into vogue. The zoot suit was another of the 1940s fashion trends which was mainly worn by the Afro-American and Mexican American young men in United States. The zoot suits were wide legged and high-waisted trousers with long coats. Wearing such an attire gave the men in the times of war much needed confidence but because of rationing and government restriction, such kind of garment was considered as outright rebellious and even unpatriotic. From hats, makeup to cloths, 1940s fashion trends were drab and convenient, but the women in 1940s did not get discouraged due to the lack of amenities, they did one thing which women do best, that is, accessorize. They kept their long locks of hair and curled it to give a striking appearance. One of the vintage 1940s hairstyles was making rolls of the upper strands of the hair and fixing it with the help of bobby pins. The remaining hair was left open and curled from the ends. Girls used bright red lipsticks to draw attention to their face. Mascara became a must have item in the ladies purse, but interestingly the eyeliner was just applied on the upper lid of the eye.As the war ceased, the austerity of the fashion world also came to an end. Femininity in the clothing style came back in to the picture and people rejoiced the victory by extravagantly dressing up and indulging themselves. Thus, the late 1940s fashion trends was a huge contrast to the clothing worn during early 1940s.<!– From http://www.buzzle.com/articles/1940s-fashion.html –> <!– google_ad_section_end –> If I had to sing my version of Julie Andrews’ These are a few of my favorite things, vying for the top spots would be Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, the Beats, Annie Hall, Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, the peace symbol, colors, cheap travel and lava lamps, and if you are good at playing the missing link, then you probably have figured out the weird connection that all of these have to the 70′s. I have always maintained that if I was given the option of choosing the decade I could live in, my answer without any doubt would be the 70′s, despite the fact that flower power came to an untimely end in the early part this decade. But since that will remain what it is…a dream, from time to time I indulge myself by picking items from the inimitable 70′s fashion to take me back to the glorious era of revolution, declaration of world peace, political awareness, and well, bell bottoms.Well, if you want to see a visual representation of 70′s fashion, then think Farah Fawcett, John Travolta and in more recent times, The 70′s show. The 1970′s fashion trends are either loved or hated. This was the decade when women started making choices according to what they wanted and not according to what fashion commanded. While some people believe that the trends popular during 70′s fashion in history was a disaster, I would like to disagree. It was about experimenting with clothes, fabrics and styles. The era of the hippies continued its style influence with fabrics from their travels extending its touch into the clothes worn in the 70′s. While there were several 70′s clothing items that were extremely popular then, there are some 70′s fashion trends that are synonymous with the decade and vintage fashion pieces even today. In this article, we will list out a few of these clothing pieces that shriek out 70′s.The mainstay for 1970′s hairstyles was long hair, for both men and women. Sideburns and long tousled blond surfer hair were styles that were hep for young men and boys. Afros were another style that became extremely popular with both women and men. One of the most popular women’s seventies hairstyles was to wear one’s hair long with a center parting. In the middle of the decade, this 70′s fashion among hairstyles gave way to wavy gypsy styles, layered shags and flicked hairstyles.By the end of the decade, 70′s fashion took huge inspiration from the 20′s, 30′s and 40′s but this trend died early with the 80′s being all about bigger and bolder styles. If you like the style trends of the 70′s, then you can go ahead and incorporate the style in your wardrobe, but a word of caution here, in case you do not look like you are going for a 70′s theme party. Ensure that you use only a couple of fashion trends from the 70′s at one time, for example, in case you want to wear platforms and high-waisted cigarette jeans, it is important that you team them up with a top that is cut in a modern style and that your accessories (like a pair of wayfarers) are from this decade and not the 70′s. So, go ahead and mix and match your clothes to give you that perfect 70′s fashion flair.<!– From http://www.buzzle.com/articles/70s-fashion.html –> <!– google_ad_section_end –>
