Balboa Bay Club Ideal for Weekend in Luxury

Why just read about the rich and famous when you can vacation with them? A stay in a Newport Beach luxury waterfront hotel will give you an up-close look at how the other half lives — or maybe we should say the other 10 percent.

The Balboa Bay Club will be glad to share its front-row view of the good life now that this legendary club of the Newport Coast elite has opened half its units to the general public. Before 2003, the resort’s prime Newport Beach real estate was only available to members of the club. Now there are 150 rooms and 10 suites available to anyone yearning for some weekend affluence.

Staying at the club a night or two would be a sure-fire way to impress the significant other, or to completely escape from job stress, but still keep costs within reason. We consider resorts like the Balboa Bay Club “special-occasion” getaways ‘ places we go to celebrate, not just to get away. With small houses on nearby Balboa Island going for $4 million and 100-foot mega-yachts parked in slips right out in front of your bay-view suite, the Balboa Bay Club takes you many steps beyond the average getaway.

The first clue you’re not in Kansas anymore is when you cruise the circular driveway to the lobby area. Behind that line of dark-colored, late-modeled SUVs there’s a gleaming new two-seat sports car you don’t quite recognize because, in all likelihood, it’s not the kind of car available at your local auto mall. Then it’s not one or two valets, but a platoon of at least six fair-haired young gentlemen running to and fro to make certain that no one waits long for their vehicle.

And the service just keeps on coming. From the smiling young woman at check-in to the cordial bellhops to the extraordinarily punctual room service attendants ‘ who managed to bring us cookies and milk while the cookies were still warm ‘ the service at the Balboa Bay Club, during our stay, was consistently top-rate.

And then there are the rooms. Once we opened the door to our bay-view suite, we could fully appreciate the club’s location and attention to detail. The sliding glass doors opened to a maritime show that continued from dawn to dusk. From small Duffy boats to super-yachts, from kayaks to college rowing teams, the sights and sounds of Balboa Bay are mesmerizing. You’ll be tempted to spend many an hour on the one of your two private decks that are perfect for viewing all of the water activities.

The rooms are over-size and our one-bedroom suite actually had two of these large rooms with two bathrooms, one so spacious it had three dressing areas, a walk-in closet, a two-person Jacuzzi-style tub and a separate shower room. The bathrooms were Italian marble, the counter-tops granite and the overall design was reminiscent of those bathroom areas you see in home d?r magazines ‘ you know, the ones you wonder if you will ever really be able to afford.

Large-screen TV, high-speed internet, games, they’re all there. And, when it came time to turn in for the night, our luxuriously appointed king-size bed was form-fitting and among the most comfortable we’ve ever slept on. Oh those 10 percent do live well.

The Balboa Bay Club actually was created in 1948, back when there were far fewer people living in Newport Beach and the area was a popular getaway for Hollywood elites. There are about 2,800 members of the club, which includes a couple thousand or so living on the property and the others just dropping by to use the spa, Olympic-style pool and other recreational facilities. Past and present members of the club include such familiar names as John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Wagner, John Travolta, Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Carey.

The first few years of the “public” Balboa Bay Club have gone well and the resort has attracted a consistent stream of getaway travelers, most hailing from California and arriving by car ‘ although John Wayne Airport is only a 15-minute drive from the resort. The temperate coastal weather and the property’s waterfront location are big draws.

In fact, Newport Beach is a pretty good draw all on its own. Take a drive and you’ll see that modern, wide palm tree-lined thoroughfares take visitors through some of the priciest real estate in the country, the gorgeous blue Pacific Ocean almost always visible with just the slightest elevation.

World-class shopping and fine restaurants are in nearly every part of the city ‘ and, we might mention, the club’s restaurant, the First Cabin, is no slouch either. Famous galleries, exquisite home furnishing stores and many fascinating shops are awaiting your exploration in nearby Corona del Mar. Or visit Fashion Island, one of two Orange County super retail complexes that just seem too grandiose to be called shopping centers (the other being South Coast Plaza in nearby Costa Mesa). Name a store found on New York’s Fifth Avenue, and you’ll probably find a version of it at Fashion Island.

For the outdoor enthusiast, it’s just a five-minute drive from the club to Upper Newport Ecological Reserve, a 752-acre coastal wetland that is home to 200 rare and endangered bird species. Visitors enjoy walking tours through the area.

On our visits to Newport Beach, we have enjoyed shopping on Balboa Island, which has a tiny, but busy Main Street ‘ actually it’s called Marine Avenue ‘ which is just a few short blocks with about 70 shops and restaurants to explore. This little example of Small Town Americana offers a wide selection of shops in all price ranges as well as several boutiques and galleries.

The downtown shopping area is just part of the attraction on Balboa Island, an island small enough that you can walk entirely around its perimeter in less than two miles. It’s fun to observe life on an island that remains exclusive because it is so expensive. There is no denying that the ever-present sunshine and the harbor views create a quiet respite from bustling city life and clogged freeways. The colorful villas and vacation-style homes on the island are quite lavish for their size.

Walk out onto your deck at the Balboa Bay Club and you’ll likely see many electrically powered Duffy boats — which you can even rent for your own cruise on the bay. Duffy boats are made locally and are specifically designed to take a group of people out on the water in total comfort and luxury for simple harbor cruising. The 21-foot boat we rented could accommodate 10 adults with plush bench seats on each side of the boat with table tops available in the middle for drinks or snacks. The boat was entirely shaded and had plenty of open areas on the sides to enjoy the view. It was easy to operate and requires little or no boating experience.

Our Duffy boat wasn’t exactly like the 100-foot mega-yachts tied up in from of our suite at the Balboa Club — but let’s just say it was a tad bit easier on fuel.

Environmentally speaking, what kinds of movies, do you think Bollywood would do better than hollywood at?

What the heck is Bollywood? Oh spare me the cultural bores pleeeaze? Um India have a vastly larger movie audience following Euber Stars bigger than John Travolta, or even Tom Sellick or Mel Gibson Russel Crow, or the Tasmanian Devil?

Who the heck is Tom Sellick? Some dude driving a fancy car in Hawaii, relax is he still around? Cringe, must treat mah gray hair?

Specifically sight your favorite Bollywood movie and whether you think cricketors should be strung up by there gonards with their gooleys cut orf as the requisite love interest of blond boy meets really cute chick? Um, lets cut to a John Cleese commercial for Faulty Towers at this point with “Wo ai Zhong ren, Wo ai Zhong ren, ni hau ma, ni hau ma, ni hau ma, zai zhen?” Panning back onto the set with a commercial by the two major Coal exporters complaining the price of electricity has to go up again due to privatisation? Whatever, have fun in Parody, Thank God you are here on Friday! Unwind dudes and chickey babes? Weeekend

10 Best Movies of the 70′s Now Available on Blu-ray

Many people have called the 1970′s the second Golden Age of Cinema, on par with movies produced during the late 1920s up to the late 1950s. With new directors such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese coming onto the scene, it’s very hard to argue this fact. The 70′s were without a doubt a time of great storytelling, producing high quality movies driven by characters more so than by plot. Great movies that still hold up today.

Below are some of these 70′s movies now available on Blu-ray. Each one is a great achievement in cinema and would be essential to anyone’s movie collection. One of the greatest advantages of owning a Blu-ray DVD Player is the fact that you get to relive watching all these wonderful movies you enjoyed in the past, as if you were watching them for the very first time. Check out these top movies of the 70′s and enjoy them once again.

M*A*S*H (Director: Robert Altman, 1970)

While being one of the most acclaimed comedies ever made, M*A*S*H is also one of the most iconic antiwar movies ever produced. Directed by Robert Altman, it is based on the novel “MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors” by Richard Hooker. Adapted for the screen by Ring Larder Jr., it tells the story of a group of medical doctors and nurses stationed in Korea during the Korean War. With no real plot, the film is about the arrival of two surgeons, Captains “Hawkeye” Pierce and “Duke” Forrest and their interaction with the surgical staff. They use a series of humorous hi-jinks to keep their sanity during all the horror that war brings.

Video Quality: M*A*S*H was never a film that looked crisp and sharp; or particularly bright. This was the intentional purpose of the original cinematographers. They used filters and brownish tones to give the film its unique look. While this look is preserved in its 1080p with AVC-encoded transfer, it still gives us the best image quality the film has ever had.

A controversial film even to this day. Its depiction of sex and violence is some of the most graphic ever put on screen. But simply stated, Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is a cinematic masterpiece. Adapted from the Anthony Burgress novel of the same name, the film is about a man, Alex DeLarge, who is a psychopathic delinquent. Among his many delights is Beethoven, rape, and ultra-violence. He is the leader of a group of young criminals who spend their nights stealing cars, breaking into peoples homes and vicious attacks on their follow human beings. Alex is taken by the government and is used as a test subject in an experiment to force criminals to become well behaving citizen. With this film, Kubrick asked us to consider the greater evil. The monstrous acts committed by Alex throughout the film or our willingness to destroy a person’s own moral choices to maintain social order.

Staring Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone and Al Pacino as his son Michael; the story takes place in New York in the late 1940′s. The Corlones are a Mafia family, and Vito is the Godfather or Don. Michael is initially an outsider in the family. Making the decision to stay out of the family business. They don’t come any funnier than Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein. A spoof of the classic horror movies Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. Using the same sets as the original, the story centers around Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and his on going effects to re-animate the dead. With the help of a bumbling assistant Igor (Marty Feldman), and the beautiful Inga (Teri Garr) he is able to create life, The Monster (Peter Boyle). With scene after scene of comedy highlights, Mel Brooks brings out the very best in his cast which includes: Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo. Unlike many comedy films, this one does not age and its jokes are still as funny as they were 30 years ago.

Peter Sellers gives an award winning performance as Chance the Gardener (Chauncey Gardiner) in the truly classic comedy film. He plays a simple man who has been isolated his entire life in a townhouse in Washington, DC. And the only things he knows anything about is what he has seen and heard on TV. Once he is thrown out into the world, he comes across an array of characters from the inner circles of political power makers and the resulting fall-out makes this one of the best comedies of the 70′s.

Long question… serious answers only, please?

First of all, I’d like to ask readers to keep in mind that this is a serious, somewhat embarrassing question. I would appreciate serious answers. Second, I want to apologize for everyone for my question being so long. In addition, please forgive me for re-posting this. I just need to broaden my answers. Long answers will not be ignored. To the contrary, they would be most welcome. Below, I’ve divided the words needed for my question into paragraphs to avoid people getting lost in reading it.

Okay… all in all, this is a question about my love life. I’ve only had one girlfriend, during my sophomore year at high school. I live in kind of a small town, so it was a bit of a miracle that she said yes when I asked her out. She dumped me after two months, and I haven’t had a single date since. We parted on as good terms as possible. She sees me as a friend, but she doesn’t know that I am still slightly angry at her for leaving me. However, I don’t have any desire to get back together with her. All I’ve ever truly wanted is a girl who would love me and allow me to love her back. I want to be the supportive, loving boyfriend that every girl wants. But, since my ex-, I have asked countless girls out, and been rejected by all of them. And this has made me cynical. It’s hard to keep believing that one day you will find a girl if every single one that you ask out doesn’t want to go out with you. It makes you think that either you are ugly to the bejesus line, or that you just aren’t someone that a girl wants to go out with. I don’t consider myself to be drop-dead John Travolta gorgeous, but I’ve been told that I’m pretty attractive. Knowing that, I can’t see why I can’t get *any* girls to go out with me. Sometimes, I think that my bad luck stems from some certain… sexual tension inside of me.

I don’t really want to include this in my question, but I think you deserve to know what I’m talking about, since you’ve taken the time to read my question. Sometimes, I go on the internet and I find images of girls and women that stimulate me. At the time, I just see these as some hot images, but the rest of the time, I just see them as a sign of weakness. I mean, should real men need to go on the internet and look at this stuff? I actually think sometimes that maybe my doing this is what’s causing my lack of a relationship, like karma or something. It’s also made me think that perhaps I don’t deserve a girlfriend if I do this kind of thing. It makes me think, “You should be ashamed of yourself. You’re a disgrace to every woman on Earth.” And most of the time, I think that my thoughts are right. I don’t think that doing that kind of thing is respectful to girls or women, and even if it was, I tend to doubt that any girl or woman would be willing to try any of the things that I see on the internet.

All of these things and more are my problem. I can’t get a date, and that really depresses me. My depression is actually getting to the point where I can’t even summon up the necessary enthusiasm to write a fanfiction story or play a video game.

My question to all you patient readers is, what can I do about my problem? Do any of you know what I’m doing wrong? Do you have any advice for me?

If you guys need more information in order to answer my question, feel free to send me a message, and I will give you whatever you need to know. I thank you all for answering.
