Dustin Hoffman is a former television-network journalist making a grab at the limelight again by pushing and controlling press coverage of the story… More >>

Hollywood Sign ? the Symbol of Hollywood City and Cinema

Fifteen meter high nine white letters that spell out the area name “Hollywood Sign” was built in 1923 as an advertisement and now it is preserved by the Hollywood Sign Trust and its main purpose is to broaden awareness of the cultural and historical value of the area. The sign was initially created as “Hollywoodland” in order to advertise and promote a new housing development in Hollywood district.

The Crescent Sign Company was appointed to design and erect the letters on the hill and facing south. The letters were 15 meters in height and 9 meters in width including four thousand bulbs for its lighting. The sign was inaugurated on the 13th of July in 1923 with the expected life time of only one year as it was not intended to be permanent. But after sudden emerge of American cinema it became a national symbol emphasizing the importance of the region and was left there in order t o promote the new cinema industry as well.

After the construction of the sign several incidents also have occurred with regard to it. In September 1932 the actress Peg Entwistle committed suicide by jumping from the letter ‘H’ as she was rejected by the American cinema industry. And in 1940 the caretaker of the sign, “Albert Kothe” destroyed the letter ‘H’ by a car accident while he was drunk. In 1940 the sign was change as only “Hollywood” when it was repaired under the contract between Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Los Angeles Parks Department. Their main idea was to highlight the city of Hollywood and not the housing development of Hollywoodland. Also it was figured out that its illumination of additional bulbs causes unnecessary cost of the sign and they were also removed after this renovation.

Now it welcomes every one to an industrial city including the leading cinema industry of the world and it has become a destination along with all sorts of festivals and other fun events participated by numerous people in all over the world. In addition to that, high standard accommodation facilities are provided especially for the rich class with luxury hotels in Beverly Hills such as the prominent Raffles L’Ermitage which boasts for its impeccable services and comforts. Thus the Hollywood sign which was created to promote a housing development now has become a national symbol that promotes the entire city.
